Buoyed by a 5-1 win over Ruidoso Aug. 30, the Lady Bulldog soccer team took the field Friday at the Mack Chase Athletic Complex looking to remain on the offensive against Santa Fe Capital.
Mission accomplished.
The Lady ‘Dogs shut out the Lady Jaguars 7-0 Friday evening to improve to 4-2 on the season heading into a week’s break.
“It was pretty much an offensive attack for us the entire time,” head coach Tim Trentham said Saturday. “Any time they did get the ball on our side of the field, they were having to shoot from way out just to try to get anything going.”
The Artesia girls wasted no time claiming the driver’s seat, as senior Raina Wesson scored four minutes in. She tacked on a second goal seven minutes later, and the Lady ‘Dogs’ 4-0 halftime tally was rounded out by Sadi Butler and Elisa Cardenas.
Wesson apparently spent the break reloading, as the senior took her total for the game to five in the second half, capping the final score with 6:05 remaining.
“Offensively, this was a better game for us than we’ve had as far as just continued pressure,” Trentham said. “Our defense was moving really well also and working real well with one another.”
The Lady Bulldogs will have a few days off to continue to work out the kinks before resuming play at 3 p.m. Saturday against Portales at The Mack.
“I’m hoping to see us get a little more creative with our offense against Portales,” Trentham said. “We have the offensive threats and they do pretty well, but we want to have more distribution up top and not be so one-dimensional with our attack. That will work with a few teams, but it’s not going to work with everybody.
“Hopefully, we can start to get a little bit more out of our attack and get more players involved.”
