
Citizens vocal in opposition of Fish and Wildlife Service plans to put sand dune lizard on endangered list

A small lizard has the potential to create big problems for the economy in southeastern New Mexico.
The Fish and Wildlife Service plans to place the sand dune lizard on the endangered species list in order to protect the reptile and its habitat. Rules under the Endangered Species Act could seriously impact one of the region’s economic staples – drilling.
About 100 concerned citizens, buoyed by the support of attendee Congressman Steve Pearce, crammed into the PVT building Monday to show opposition for placing the lizard on the list. The wheels are already in motion for an opposition rally at an upcoming Fish and Wildlife Service public hearing on the matter.
