The Artesia Police Department recently released statistics following Operation DWI (driving while intoxicated) saturation patrols performed over the weekend.

According to APD Sergeant Lindell Smith, the saturation patrols are staged with funding provided by government and credit agencies such as the Department of Transportation. The agencies provide funding for various types of operations such as Operation Buckle-Down, 100 Days and Nights of Summer and Operation DWI. The funding allows departments to place additional officers on the streets to focus specifically on traffic issues.

“The (police) department works to ensure the safety of the motoring public by enforcing ordinances and statutes on drivers who choose not to voluntarily comply with the rules of the road,” said Smith. “The safety of the motoring public is important to us as a police department and when we have the opportunity to enforce those types of laws with the officers on duty we are going to do so. As we approach summer, Memorial Day, Easter and other holidays we are going to continue saturation patrols and other types of traffic-specific law enforcement operations to keep the traveling motorists safe.” … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
