With just seven months of operation under its belt, a local bakery is already making a name for itself as a successful New Mexico small business.

During the 2018 legislative session, Sweet Confections by K&M will be recognized as a Star Client of the New Mexico Small Business Development Center Network during a ceremony at La Fonda in Santa Fe. The annual reception recognizes businesses and entrepreneurs from across New Mexico who are seeing tremendous growth in their businesses.

Owners Kayla Dominguez and Melissa Navarrette called on the Carlsbad Small Business Development Center to help them start their business. There, the two learned all they would… knead… to open a bakery. On June 20, 2017, Sweet Confections by K&M opened its doors for business.

“They walked us through everything to do with opening our business. They helped get our tax ID number, find a location, and all of that,” said Kayla.

Melissa and Kayla have a passion for baking and wanted to use that passion to bring sweet treats to Artesia. The business is growing, and the pair hopes to build on their initial success in 2018.

“The Carlsbad SBDC helped get the ball rolling to get us up and running smoothly, effectively and hassle free. They were very helpful in offering assistance along the way, of not only planning and beginning a business but also offering assistance after startup,” Melissa said.

Sweet Confections will be recognized during the NMSBDC Network Star Client Reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at La Fonda on the plaza in Santa Fe.
