Looking back 40, 30 and 20 years ago, the following are excerpts from the Artesia Daily Press from Aug. 27-Sept. 2.

40 years ago
Aug. 27-Sept.2, 1977

As reported in the Pinon News: Ira McKinley of Sacramento had as guests recently; Mr. and Mrs. Larry Mansfield from Bakersfield, Calif. Mansfield and McKinley were World War II buddies and were in lots of combats together, including the Battle of the Bulge. They have kept in touch all these years. The past weekend the McKinley’s had as guests their son, Marvin “Buzz” Burris, wife, Polly, and two children from Rexburg, Idaho. Buss is supervisor for Farmers Home Administration there. The McKinley’s daughter, Pattie and husband, Pete Brady and two sons. Troy and Sterling, planned to join them in the visit and fun.

The Artesia Christian College started its first day of classes with a flag raising ceremony. The ceremony opened the second year for the college with new student orientation activities held last week. Raising the flag were Rick Wiles and Art Ryan.

The remodeling of the old Artesia fire station into a senior citizens center began Monday with demolition of some walls and ripping out of the old cement engine room floor. The remodeling is expected to be finished by Christmas.

Manning the defensive line for the Bulldogs this year are James Hedin, Mark Bucci, Blaize Campanella, Danny Perez, Gilbert Almager, Kevin Pittman, Mike Hill, Mike DePorto, Agustine Corona, Baron Chandler, Oscar Bejarano, Randy Brown, Luther Belcher and John Riley.
Linebackers for the Bulldogs are Danny DeHoyos, Joaquin Carrera, Jimmy Hamilton, Junior Almager, Eddie Gaba, tony Fuentes, Larry Ivy and Raul DeHoyos. The Bulldogs host the Roswell Goddard Rockets in their season open Friday night in the Bulldog Bowl.
Patrolling the defensive backfield for the Bulldogs this year are Kern Horner, Clendon Kirkpatrick, Roy Terpening, Mike Anderson, Mark Bowdish, Randy Bristow, Gary Florez, Greg Utterback, Richard Sanchez, Toby Rhodes, Bruce Waldrip, Henry Saiz, Eddie Gaba, Randy Russell and Jerry Marquez. Supplying the punch to the Bulldog offense at the end positions this year are Kern Horner, Roy Terpening, Gary Florez, Mike Anderson, Randy Brown, Randy Russell, Raul DeHoyos, Ronnie Carson, Jerry Marquez, Luther Belcher and Henry Saiz.

Aug. 27-Sept. 2, 1987

If the Artesia Bulldogs felt they owed some teams some things for sundry indignities suffered in 1986, then they took the first step toward repaying some old debts Friday night. First on the Convince List was the Ruidoso Warriors, who came into Bulldog Bowl Friday in the 1987 season opener for both teams and went home with a 26-6 spanking.

Members of the Artesia Good Samaritan Helpers Club are reviving an old tradition as they work together to complete a quilt for the club’s annual Fall Bazaar. Members gathered early last week for an old-fashioned quilting bee in the home of Mrs. Joe Threewit. Among the members working on the quilt were Lillian Bryan, Doris Waller, Lenora Reasner, Imogene Lee, Edna Allman, Marie Garcia, Cecelia Rogers, Irma Dorothy, Jo Threewit, Mary Louise Malone and Margaret Russell, club president.

Artesia Valley Lions Club presented the club’s Citizen of the Year award to Artesia resident Mack Chase for his support of Artesia and its civic clubs in their many and varied projects.

As reported in the Pinon News: The Mesa Verde Ranch sold recently and Bob Brown from Winston was here the past week moving some of his household goods and the remnant of his cattle.

Anita Harvey was the winner of the first Daily Press Pigskin Payoff of the year as she finished with a 15-5 record. Three other people — Donald W. Price, Chuck Foster and Mick Kelly — also went 15-5, but Mrs. Harvey won it on the tire-breaker as her 35-0 pick was closest to the actual 26-6 margin.

Aug. 27-Sept. 2, 1997

Artesians filled Bulldog Bowl to watch the Bulldogs defeat Ruidoso, 19-8, Friday. Most residents who remember when the bowl was built said ti has not changed much in 30 years except for the visitors’ concession stand and improvements on the track and grass, and the parking lot located outside of the bowl. Heavy equipment began digging out what would become the pit in December 1966.

Although the Artesia football program will seek its 20th New Mexico State championship in 1997, head coach Cooper Henderson said the goal for his team is to win one championship each year. “it’s the quest for one,” he said. “You do the best you can with that team that year. I never mentioned 20 to any of them or two in a row.”

Grandma’s House Board of Directors president Bambi Vandiver presented a plaque to Grandma’s House executive director Annie Woolworth in appreciation of her service to Grandma’s House. Woolworth and her family are moving to Albuquerque. Jan Walker will assume the executive director position.
