The New Mexico State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday in Chaves County.

NMSP officers were advised around 6:33 p.m. Wednesday of an officer-involved shooting on U.S. 380 near mile marker 195 involving Chaves County Sheriff’s Office deputies. Following the exchange of gunfire, the suspect had fled into the adjacent sand dunes just off U.S. 380.

The suspect, identified as Chadwick Taylor, 40, of Conchas Dam, was found around 8 p.m. and taken into custody without incident by NMSP officers.

U.S. 380 from mile marker 162-201 was closed for the majority of the night while the NMSP Investigations Bureau conducted scene processing and collection of evidence.

No injuries were reported. The suspect was transported to the Chaves County Detention Center on a charge of one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting or evading an officer.

The deputy’s name will not be released until interviews are complete. The case remains under investigation.
