TO THE EDITOR:

With the school year off to a good start, the staff at 7024U are excited and ready to begin the fall session offered at the outreach center. The question has been asked many times, “what do you do and who is it for?” I would like to let the community know that we are available for youth in grades 6-12 to offer tutoring services and self-help services. Our mission is: Giving Artesia’s youth the necessary tools to become productive members of the community and society through prevention, intervention and treatment services.

Education is the foundation of the success of all youth and through education, the youth will have self-esteem. We encourage academic success with our tutoring program, we have a computer lab available that the youth have access to complete any homework due. We have a tutor from Artesia High School that tutors the youth after school. She is available to help until 7:30 if the need arises. For the youth who are enrolled in the program, grades are monitored regularly to help our youth stay on track of their academics. The tutor is available from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Our commitment, alongside our volunteer instructors, is challenging youth to create rather than destroy. Creative Art Activities is a weekly art program which introduces several art activities to the youth, such as Airbrushing, Drawing, Ceramics. Other activities we offer are educational field trips (according to the availability of volunteers and funding available). When youth are not working on homework subjects, the kids have an art room available to work on different themes and craft ideas to help the youth enjoy each other’s company. We are always open to having volunteers come to the center to shape any ideas or projects that they have.

Another service that is offered for the youth that is enrolled in the after school/tutoring program is a meal. Staff personnel will provide a nutritious snack/meal to the kids immediately upon arriving at the program center free of charge.

Parents are encouraged to come by the program center to enroll their children in the after-school program. Transportation is provided for the youth who are enrolled in the program from 3:30-5 p.m., but the center will remain open until 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Please call us at 736-7024 for any questions you might have.

Thank you,
Missy Bejarano
