A firefighter walks past a burning recreational vehicle that ignited after a fire that began north of U.S. 285 and west of North Rural 13th Street torched 30 acres, destroying the RV and a nearby garage. Artesia Fire Department Chief JD Hummingbird commented during the City Council meeting Tuesday that the fire burned four structures, several vehicles, and caused up to $250,000 worth of damages. Hummingbird said a lit cigarette thrown out the window of a passing vehicle might have ignited the fire.
