The Bulldog volleyball team got its second season off to a solid start Tuesday on the road, defeating the Ramettes of Portales in four games.

The Artesia girls started off strong with a 25-18 decision in the opening set and edged Portales in the second, 25-22, before coming up short in the third, 20-25. The ‘Dogs didn’t let things get out of hand from there, however, bouncing back to end the match in four, 25-22.

The victory improves Artesia to 14-3 on the season and 1-0 in District 4-AAAA play as they prepare to head straight into their second tough match-up of the week against Goddard. The Rockets are 15-3 on the year and are also 1-0 in district after dispatching Lovington in three Tuesday at Ground Zero, 25-6, 25-13 and 25-8.

“Between us, Portales and Goddard, it’s anybody’s game,” head coach Alan Williams said last week. “It’s whoever happens to play well on that night, but our girls are excited and ready to get going in district.”

Game time Thursday is 6:30 p.m. at Bulldog Pit. Artesia will close out Round One at 6:30 p.m. on Halloween Night against Lovington at the Pit.
