It was a rough night Monday for the Bulldog soccer team.

Before a big home crowd at the Mack Chase Athletic Complex, the boys in orange were looking to hang another L on the defending Class 4A state champion Lovington Wildcats and, most importantly, remain in the lead in District 4-AAAA play.

Intead, everything that could go wrong did against the squad they’d bested 1-0 Oct. 7 on the road. And this time around, the ‘Dogs were on the wrong end of a shutout, 5-0.

The ‘Cats racked up a 3-0 lead in the first 40 minutes of play before capping the dominant evening with two more goals in the second half.

Artesia managed just three shots on goal on the night to Lovington’s 17, with junior keeper Sebastian Gonzalez saving 12 of those attempts.

With the loss, the Bulldogs dropped to 11-7-1 on the season, 3-2 in district. They’ll be taking on Portales at 6 p.m. Thursday at The Mack.
