An attempted warrant service early this morning led to a shootout that left the suspect dead and one officer wounded.

The Artesia Police Department was dispatched at 6:26 a.m. today to the 1800 block of Feather Avenue in reference to shots fired.

According to reports, deputies with the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office, federal agents, and agents with the Pecos Valley Drug Task Force had been attempting to serve a warrant at the residence of Michael Todd Evans when Evans opened fire.

Law enforcement returned fire, and Evans was reportedly killed.

One officer was wounded in the shootout and is reported to be in stable condition. It is unclear with which agency that officer is affiliated.

Information was unavailable from the ECSO, and attempts to contact the New Mexico State Police and the federal public information officer in charge of the case were unsuccessful. The APD is on scene in a security and evidence capacity only.
