The Artesia Chamber of Commerce announced the Hometown Hero of 2017 at their Power Lunch on Tuesday: Monte Avery, who recently retired from Artesia High School after teaching agriculture and science for many years as well as serving as the FFA sponsor.

Artesia Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Hayley Klein introduced Mr. Avery, mentioning his “special, all-consuming mission to build leaders out of our youth…” and his dedication to his career as “a 24/7/365 job with volunteer hours with our kids before and after school, on trips, at contests, in the evenings…”

He is always ready to challenge our youth to do their best, and then inspires them to improve on that.

The Hometown Hero program is sponsored by Devon Energy; the Artesia Chamber of Commerce thanks the First Baptist Church for hosting their Power Lunch series each month, and Coats Plumbing and HVAC for sponsoring the lunch and speaker Walter Nussbaum.

The next Power Lunch will be held in October.
