This week students and teachers in the Artesia Public Schools celebrated Red Ribbon Week asking students to make healthy choices, stay drug-free and be heroes of their own stories.
Red Ribbon Week began in 1985 as an honor to Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique “KiKi” Camarena who was tortured and murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico.
People started wearing red ribbons to symbolize a stand against illegal drugs and to honor Camarena.
Artesia’s theme was: Every Hero Has a Story… Every Bulldog has a Superpower.
Comic book superheroes, historical figures and Halloween themes were part of the week’s activities.
