Coming fresh off a state championship run, the Artesia boys’ basketball team claimed victory again over the El Paso Tigers 60-50 in the first game of the annual Artesia Team Camp.
New Mexico-bred Harken and jockey Sergio Becerra Jr., the 2-1 morning line favorite in Saturday’s running of the Mountain Top Derby, will race for more than a trophy and the winner’s share of the $200,000 purse.

Artesia boys’ basketball coach Michael Mondragon held his 11th annual basketball camp this week at the Bulldog Pit. Mondragon said 141 basketball campers participated in half-court and full-court scrimmages and worked on skills such as free-throw shooting, layups and defensive rebounding.
Jingle Wood’s four-length victory in trials for the $350,000 Mountain Top Futurity on May 30 was an eye-opener for racing fans at Ruidoso Downs, including trainer Clint Crawford. The gelding’s race time of 17.608 seconds at 350-yards was fastest that day.
The only thing Artesia needed for a rematch with Silver City and a chance to win the District 4-4A state softball championship was a shutout inning against the Lovington Wildcats.
