The artwork of Artesia High School senior art students Andrea Alvarado, Lily Heady and Savana Watts is currently on display in the lobby of the Ocotillo Performing Arts Center.

Community members may recognize Alvarado, Heady and Watts for their work on some of the murals of the Artesia Main Street Mural Trail, including “Under a Sky of Azure.”

The Ocotillo display aims to boost the more personal pieces completed by the artists, featuring creations of pencil, clay, paints, and more. A display of multiple artists, the diversity of the collection includes a piece for all tastes, including natural and landscape pieces, portraits, elements of realism as well as surrealist influences.

Alvarado dabbles with multiple mediums: clay, paints and colored pencil to name a few. Most of her displayed works focus on natural elements such as snakes and flowers, with vibrant colors providing dimension and detail.

Watts shows multiple sketches of everyday moments such as grocery shopping or sitting at Kith and Kin with a friend, as well as highly-detailed portraits of an elderly man and woman, capturing time and people with the tip of her pencils.

Heady uses three-dimensional aspects in many of the works on display, using strong imagery and symbolism to articulate the challenges many humans face in terms of relationship with the physical body.

Each of the artists’ styles work together to create a diverse and well-defined collection of work, which will be on display in the Ocotillo lobby until the closing reception, which will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 29. The public is invited to attend that reception to meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments.
