A 2-month-old infant remains in serious condition after an Artesia man admitted to repeatedly shaking the young male to stop his cries.

Twenty-three-year-old Emiliano Barela was arrested at approximately 4:30 p.m. Friday and charged with child abuse.

According to the criminal complaint filed Friday, Dec. 3, in Magistrate Court, Barela picked the infant up from his girlfriend’s workplace and brought the child to his home sometime around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, because the child had an illness and was “fussy.”

Barela told authorities that, once he arrived at his residence, he placed the infant in its bassinet, where the baby slept for approximately 45 minutes before it awoke, crying. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
