The sizable contingent of Artesia fans were on their feet as first Mariah Granados, then Ashley Boyce, then the speedy Courtni Callaway crossed home plate. At second – having advanced on the throw home – stood junior Vanessa Lopez, who gestured triumphantly to her ecstatic teammates after delivering the three-RBI single that put the Lady Bulldog softball team back in the game Friday evening against Farmington.

After tying the Lady Scorpions at 1-all in the second inning, errors had begun to take their toll, and the girls in orange had fallen behind Farmington 5-1 going into the fifth. All five of the Scorps’ runs were unearned.

But with one swing of the bat, Lopez had pulled Artesia back into contention, and – following a hard-hit single off the third baseman by Alyssa Rodriguez that placed runners at first and third – the Lady ‘Dogs appeared poised to tie the game and possibly more. A ground out would end that threat, but regardless, Artesia had new life.
