There’s something to be said for perseverance.

Over the past few years, the Bulldog track and field team has flirted with hardware at the Class 4A State Meet, inching ever closer – once just a point away – from the top three but coming up short each time.

The ‘Dogs last took a souvenir home for their trophy case in 2004, when the squad claimed its second consecutive runner-up finish. And with perennial favorite Albuquerque Academy dominating the past decade, the boys in orange would have been happy with a trophy in any color.

But imagine how it felt when that color turned out to be blue.

Following sophomore Josh Gonzales’ fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash at just after 2 p.m. Saturday at the Great Friends of UNM Track and Field Complex in Albuquerque, the Bulldogs found themselves with a 12-point lead over the Academy Chargers, 60 to 48. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
