The Artesia City Council voted Tuesday to continue the public hearing regarding the new garbage collection ordinance until the first meeting in November.

The proposed ordinance would allow the city to replace some of the current garbage containers with new roll out “polycart” containers in areas where a traditional dumpster would not be fit or safe, such as neighborhoods without alleys, and set rules and regulations regarding their use. The ordinance has been before the council for several months now, and the most recent draft of the ordinance added measures for a grievance process as well as further clarification regarding what qualifies as trash and what does not.

Artesia residents approved of the progress, but expressed some concerns about the details of the grievance process as well as uncertainties about provisions requiring all garbage to be bagged and prohibiting the burning of any solid waste in city limits. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
