Services are scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Hermosa Church of Christ for Donald C. Smith of Artesia.

Smith, 86, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, at Landsun Health Services in Carlsbad.

Roby Zumwalt and Darrell Brown will officiate at the services, with interment to follow at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Caleb Spence, Matthew Nichols, Travis Bilberry, Brett Smith, Tim Holland and Stan Hammond.

Visitation began at 10 a.m. today at Terpening & Son Mortuary.

Donald was born March 27, 1930, in Avis, N.M., the son of Charley H. and Daisy M. (Munson) Smith. He moved to Artesia in 1949 from Avis.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951-53. After returning home from his tour of duty, he married Shirley M. Graves on Nov. 4, 1966, in Artesia.

Donald was the owner/operator of Smith Rentals for many years before retiring. He was a member of Hermosa Church of Christ, and his family and work were what he enjoyed in life.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley G. Smith, of the family home; children Rusty Smith and wife Jeanie of Ruidoso, Debbie Nichols and husband Jon of Midland, Texas, Mike Smith and wife Margie of Woodward, Okla., and Kim Allison of Artesia; siblings Roberta Miller of Alamogordo, Gerald Smith and wife Thelma of Colville, Wash., Geneva Holland and husband Cicero of Artesia, and Sharon Jones and husband Floyd of Spokane, Wash.; grandchildren Brooke Young, Brett Smith, Caleb Spence, Matthew Nichols, Travis Bilberry, Chelsea Bilberry, La Dona Barber, Misty Bryant, Jason Nichols, Wes Allison and Kim Barris; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Frances Smith; brothers-in-law Ernest Miller and Clinton Stone; and son-in-law Jim Allison.
