Young, 89, passed away Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, at his home.

He was born Oct. 18, 1927, in Carlsbad, the eldest son of Joe B. and Mary (Cone) Young. Don grew up near Hope, attending Hope Public Schools and graduating in 1945. He then attended Modesto Junior College in California and Harding College.

Don served in the U.S. Air Force and spent two years at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska, attaining the rank of sergeant.

He worked for one year at a lumber mill in Flagstaff, Ariz., before moving to Tucson, Ariz., in 1951 and working one year in a cabinet shop.

At church, he met the love of his life, Katie Maureen Coker, and the two were married June 21, 1952. Four children – Donald Rodrick Young, Alyson Young, Maureen Tortorella and Shela Vilardell – were born to this happy couple during their time in Tucson.

On Feb. 2, 1953, Don was hired by El Paso Natural Gas Company in Tucson as a utility man. He retired Feb. 1, 1991, in El Paso, having served as a supervisor of the accounting section of El Paso’s Southern Division.

In 1992, Don returned to Hope, where he built a beautiful home on the farm where he grew up. He was a faithful Christian, having been baptized into Christ in 1938. He served as an elder both in Tucson and El Paso.

Memorial contributions may be made to Philippines Work Through Hope Church of Christ, Kindred Hospice, or J&J Home Care Inc.
