Graveside services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at the Pinon Cemetery for Dwayne “Slim” Stewart of Weed.

Stewart, 86, passed away Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, in Artesia.

Don Brown will officiate the services. Honorary pallbearers are all of his friends.

Dwayne was born Jan. 17, 1931, in Caddo, Okla., the son of Zed and Mattie (Begley) Stewart. He came to Artesia in 1951 from Canyon, Texas.

On May 25, 1955, he married Alvaree Jernigan in Artesia.

Dwayne was a rancher and school teacher in Weed. He played basketball for the CVE Travellers, which was part of the National Industrial Basketball League. He loved to watch his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports and was known to always help with whatever project came up.

Survivors include his wife, Alvaree Stewart, of Weed; sons Vaughn Teel and wife Doreen of Weed, and Boyd Stewart and wife Melissa of Artesia; daughters AndaRee Pierce and husband Terry of Pinon, and Tana Steinback and husband Jim of Artesia; sister Mattie Jo Russell of Oklahoma City, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and one brother.
