The Artesia Fire Department is planning to hire two firefighters and candidates were put through a rigorous application process Tuesday. The department requires candidates to pass several tests designed to challenge their minds, body and spirit. Candidates must pass an extensive written exam, a 100-foot Platform Ladder Climb (designed to test candidates’ fear of heights) and a timed Candidate Physical Abilities Test. Candidates who pass the first round of tests will then be scrutinized by an interview board. Chief JD Hummingbird explained the strenuous application process is especially important because of the physical demands put on firefighters. “You are only as strong as the weakest guy on the team,” said Hummingbird.
