Nancy Dunn, Artesia Historical Museum manager and author of “Artesia,” part of the “Images of America” series, discusses the book she and former museum registrar Naomi Florez put together using photos and information from the museum archives as part of the Friends of the Artesia Public Library’s Books N’ Bites program Friday. The book was part of the Statehood Centennial Project in 2012 and was printed just before Christmas that year. It won a New Mexico Heritage Preservation Award in 2013 for Best Historic Publication in New Mexico for 2012. “Artesia” took approximately six months to compile, and Dunn said the hard part was narrowing down the photos. Only about one-third of those originally selected were used. “It took me months just to put them all back,” she said. The earliest photo in the book is from 1899 or 1900 and is of Blake Springs in the Roselawn Avenue area. Dunn said her favorite photo is in the Clubs and Organizations chapter: a pet rock memorial garden that was located at First Street and Richardson Avenue. Copies of the book are available for purchase at B&B Newsstand.
