Amber Baker displays the HP Streaming Laptop she won for taking first place in the Artesia Public Library’s Adult Summer Reading Program “Who’s your hero?” essay contest.

Placing second in the contest was Larissa Hansen, while David Ryker finished third. The adult program’s ultimate grand-prize winner of an iPad was Shirley Salsberry, and the Reading Wildly Challenge grand-prize winner of a Kindle Paperwhite was Evangelina Salsberry.

“I sincerely thank all our Summer Reading participants for taking part in our program this summer,” said Jo Scott, adult services librarian. “Appreciation also goes out to all the volunteers who helped with the Artesia Heroes BBQ as well as the firefighters, police and veterans who attended. For those who were keeping track of the Battle for Artesia tournament, the City of Artesia now has an ‘Evil Overlord’ in the guise of Smaug, the dragon from ‘The Hobbit.’ He narrowly defeated Thor, the Norse God of Thunder, by one draw.”
