TO THE EDITOR:

The Artesia Animal Shelter needs your help with animals running at large. In the past five years the shelter as seen an increase in the number of animals brought to the shelter, and the number of animals killed by vehicles. We can decrease the number of animals running at large by following some simple guidelines.

The first one is to insure your pet is secure on your property with fresh water, food, and shelter. This will help satisfy your animal’s needs and will less likely try to escape to look for these items. Second make sure your pet is microchipped. If they get out and are picked up, this will make it easier to get them back to you and in a shorter period of time. Thirdly, if your animal is sterilized they are more likely to stay in the yard instead of fulfilling their need to roam.

By following these guidelines we as a community can decrease the number of animals brought to the shelter as well as the number of fatalities caused by vehicles and overcrowding. If you are missing your animal please contact the animal shelter as soon as possible as we may be able to help you find them.

The Artesia Animal Shelter does have animals for adoption as well and we are open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Please come by and visit with us anytime.
