Several Lakewood residents were evacuated via Portales Care Flight helicopter Thursday due to steady rainfall which flooded several areas in Eddy and Chaves counties.

Emergency service crews worked diligently to rescue 64 residents from their homes after residents of the SKP RV park awoke Thursday morning to find their RVs in danger as the floodwaters washed away land connections. Roads were also flooded and residents trapped on the low-lying land.

Numerous evacuation teams were in place, with the New Mexico State Police guiding teams and directing traffic. Walking the road were resident evacuees, sifting through recovered belongings and shaken from the devastation but somehow breathing a little easier. Flown out by helicopter, evacuees Charlette Bratcher and Brian Hawes said some properties had been washed down the road. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
