Eddy County Sheriff Mark Cage has announced via Facebook that he will begin hosting active-shooter training sessions this month for groups and the public.

“Enhancing emergency preparedness within Eddy County is imperative in keeping our community safe,” Cage’s post reads.

The free training, dubbed Operation Hard Target, will begin with a 1-5 p.m. session Saturday, July 30, and will be offered twice a month thereafter. Seating is limited, and registration is required by visiting www.co.eddy.nm.us/505/Sheriff; calling 575-887-7551; or stopping by the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office, 1502 Corrales Drive, Carlsbad.

Schools, businesses, faith groups, civic organizations, or any groups of 15 or more may also submit a request for a group training session.

Topics to be covered will include the Department of Homeland Security’s “Run, Hide, Fight” response method; lessons learned from previous active-shooter incidents; using resources available to protect yourself and others; vital information to relay to emergency dispatchers; and the importance of a survival mindset.
