Think you’ve got talent? That you’re destined for superstardom?

Try conquering Artesia before you move on to world domination. The Artesia Arts Council will give you your chance Saturday with its inaugural Artesia Talent competition.

This show isn’t just open to aspiring singers; dancing, drama, spoken word, magic, gymnastics, and any other form of talent are all on the table, and kids and adults alike can put theirs on display.

Both the youth and adult divisions will be judged by a panel of experts, and a People’s Choice Award is also up for grabs. Acts are encouraged to bring as many fans as possible, as the People’s Choice recipient will be determined by the amount of cash donations they receive.

Artesia Talent is serving as a fundraiser for the AAC, so all donations as well as entry and admission fees — $25 per-act entry fee, $5 per-person admission — will benefit the council and the Ocotillo Performing Arts Center, and aid the entities in their effort to bring quality entertainment and artistic intsruction to the Artesia community.

Other rules and regulations include:

• The event is open to all Artesians and residents of immediately surrounding communities. If the act contains two or more people, at least one member must be from Artesia.

• The Adult division will consist of competitors ages 18 and up. In the Youth division, all participants must have written consent from a parent.

• Contestants are only allowed one entry.

• Maximum number of members allowed in one act is eight.

• A time limit will be in place, based on the number of entries. Acts must perform for at least three minutes. Maximum time limit will be provided prior to the event.

• Baton-twirlers or any acts using batons, machetes, knives, etc., will not be accepted. Firearms, smoke, or smoke effects will not be allowed onstage at any time, and lip synching is prohibited. Profanity and vulgar lyrics are also prohibited. Attire should be respectable, with no alcohol, tobacco, political or drug references shown on clothing.

• Tracks may be used for solo performances but must not include lead vocals or solo instrument for musicians. Always bring a backup, and tracks must be brought to rehearsal. Rehearsals will be open to contestants, accompanists and coordinators only. Each contestant must attend an information/rehearsal meeting, and no music changes will be accepted after rehearsal.

• Technician and microphones will be provided. Acts must provide their own recorded music, instruments, props, etc., and recorded music should be on a CD or flash drive.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at the OPAC. To obtain a registration form, or for more information, contact AAC Executive Director Laurie Schotz at laurie@artesiaartscouncil.com.
