A funeral mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for Steve Casares of Artesia.
Casares, 52, passed away Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Fr. Jorge Vargas will officiate the services, with interment to follow at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bobby Alcocer, Michael Casares, Jeremiah Casares, Paul Casares, Eric Casares, Brandon Hinds, Anthony Ponce and Danny Losoya.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Terpening & Son Mortuary. A rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Grace.
Steve was born Sept. 29, 1964, in Alamogordo to Steven Singleterry Casares and Consuelo (Lira) Casares. He was a longtime Artesia resident after moving here in 1980 from Mayhill.
On June 25, 1983, he married Camille Granados in Artesia.
Steve was an owner/operator of his own sandblasting company for the oilfields. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, the Artesia Moose Lodge, and the NRA. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also an avid reader of Louis L’Amour books. His love was getting to spend time with and enjoy his family.
Survivors include his wife, Camille Casares, of the family home; sons Michael Casares and wife Tina, Jeremiah Casares, Steven Ace Casares, Michael Casares Jr., and Bobby Alcocer and wife Alejandra, all of Artesia; his mother, Consuelo Casares, of Artesia; sisters Connie Hernandes, Peggie Baggerly and husband Phillip, Tammy Ponce and husband Abel, Lola Casares, and Barbara Casares, all of Artesia, Mary Williams and husband Jaime of Las Cruces, and Julie Hinds and husband Roy of Roswell; brothers Rodrigo “Chuy” Lira of Artesia, Paul Casares of Carlsbad, Eric Casares of Roswell, Fernando Lira of Mexico, and Sammy Casares of El Paso; numerous nieces and nephews; in-laws Richard and Elfie “Anna” Granados; and sisters-in-law Ronnie, Rebecca and Rikki Granados, all of Artesia.
He was preceded in death by his father, Steven Casares Sr.; son Steven Joe Casares III; brother Bennie Casares; and nieces Cassandra Chavarria and Consuelo “Chelo” Casares.
