Eddy County native finds angling success with kayak

Anthony Barrera picked up his first fishing pole 30 years ago while growing up in Artesia. He enjoyed fishing along the banks of the Pecos River but he wanted more – he yearned to fish in places he couldn’t get to by walking.

Today, he fishes from a kayak instead of a riverbank and he competes in tournaments all across the United States.

“I fished (at) Black River, the Pecos at the (Carlsbad) Beach,” Barrera said. “We would go to the Flumes (north of Carlsbad) for sunfish.” With his kayak, Barrera now can “get the spots … I always wanted (to fish) and it’s paid off. It’s been a great experience to live out my childhood dream to get to spots that I normally couldn’t if I didn’t have my kayak.”

Barrera, 44, discovered the joys of kayak fishing in 2020.

“I came into it through a friend,” he said during a telephone interview from Albuquerque where he works for Sandia National Laboratories and fishes in his free time. “It’s easier for me to store a kayak in my garage with limited space for a boat. I don’t have to have that maintenance upkeep of a bass boat.

“It’s really fun to be out there on a kayak and visiting new places, it’s been a great experience.”

“With my kayak,” Barrera said, “I am able to cover more area … and catch some really nice fish. At Elephant Butte I am able to fish in areas that are not pressured by other anglers. The kayak allows me to start on the west side and go across to the east side.”

Fishing the bank, he said, is limited by obstacles posed by terrain, including salt cedar, rocks, steep drop-offs, thick vegetation and muddy marsh areas.

Kayaks are ideal for fishing because of their construction and adaptability, Barrera said.

“The kayaks we use in tournaments are generally sit-on-top kayaks.” he said. “They are considered better for fishing due to their stability, ease of entry and exit, and ability to accommodate fishing gear. They are also easier to customize for fishing and allow for standing, which is beneficial for casting and visibility. They can be powered by an electric motor. We transport them with a trailer or in the bed of a truck.”

Barrera competes in the New Mexico Bass Nation Kayak Series and after a slow start, he said, he’s rising to the challenge of tournament fishing.

“Last year was my best year,” he said. “I had two first-place (finishes), a second place, a third place and several top 10s. This year I’ve had four top-10 finishes. I haven’t won any.”

In May, he finished sixth at the 11th Annual New Mexico Kayak Anglers tournament at Elephant Butte Lake near Truth or Consequences and he also finished sixth during a May tournament hosted by New Mexico Kayak Bass Fishing (NMKBF).

Barrera finished fifth during the NMKBF June Fishing Showdown. On July 12, he finished seventh at the Wyoming Kayak Bassmasters Tournament in Wheatland, Wyoming.

Barrera said interest in kayak fishing has grown nationwide over the past five years.

“Everybody is stepping up their game. It’s just awesome how much the sport is growing,” he said.

According to the Data Intelo Consulting website, interest in kayak fishing in the United States was forecast to grow by 5.9% percent from 2024 to 2032. The pastime’s market size is expected to grow to about $1.35 billion, according to the research and marketing firm.

“The growth factor driving this market includes the increasing popularity of recreational fishing and water sports, coupled with advancements in kayak manufacturing technologies and materials,” stated Data Intelo.

Barrera has passed along his love of fishing to his 12-year-old son Maverick – but Maverick sees the sport in a different light.

“I’ve taken him out on a kayak, and he actually enjoys fishing from the bank more than the kayak. So, we’re quite opposite,” Barrera said.

Finer points of kayak fishing

Barrera encourages new kayak anglers to find a partner before hitting the waters.

“Everybody will be there to help you out. I have experienced this from Arizona to Texas (and) now Wyoming and Colorado. It’s a great time to reconnect with yourself and be out there in nature and explore different lakes,” he said.

Barrera said the amount of fishing equipment you need can vary. He said some people just carry a couple of fishing rods and a small tackle box.

“I thought I carried a lot of gear,” he said. “I finally met somebody who carried more than me. I usually carry eight fishing rods and I thought that was a lot. We met somebody that carried 13 fishing rods in his kayak. It was a sight to see.”

Along with rods and tackle, Barrera carries a wireless fish finder, a portable device that uses sonar technology to provide data on fishing conditions and help anglers locate fish.

As the fishing season winds down, he said, his goal is to qualify for the national kayak fishing tournament in 2026.

“We’re trying to work through and find out how we can get more people in the sport and qualify more people for the national event,” Barrera said.

Denison gets to work as Eddy County Fair Queen

Artesia’s Baylee Denison didn’t have much time to bask in her new role as Eddy County Fair Queen after claiming the crown from outgoing queen Taylor Salter.

Baylee’s July 25 coronation as fair queen was immediately followed by her first official duty: handing out ribbons and banners to her fellow 4-H and Future Farmers of America members during the 4-H/FFA awards ceremony at the Eddy County Fairgrounds’ livestock barn show ring.

“I didn’t think I was going to win. It made my heart race,” said Denison, a 15-year-old sophomore at Artesia High School.

Although Baylee was officially awarded the title of fair queen last Friday, she actually won the crown during a contest held July 19 in the food court building after the annual pre-fair cleanup of the fairgrounds.

Denison and two other contestants – Meagan McKibben from Carlsbad and Paisley Phillips from Artesia – competed before a panel of judges, who rated the would-be fair queens in five categories including a speech that accounted for 40% of the final score and a personal Interview that was worth 30%. Modeling, impromptu questions and professionalism each accounted for 10%.

Denison said she had to go through an extensive preparation process.

“Tons of shopping. Getting my hair done. I had to write a speech and practice it all the time,” she said.

She found time despite juggling an active and busy schedule at the fair that included showing sheep and goats in the livestock competition.

“There’s a lot of work with the animals and more work with my FFA chapter,” Denison said.

As fair queen, will Denison serve as an ambassador for the fair and Eddy County, handing out awards, riding in parades, participating in the 2026 county fair and performing other duties as requested by the fair board or superintendent, according to guidelines posted on the fair’s website.

“I have been so proud of Taylor,” said Artesia High School FFA advisor Haley Ellett. “She has represented the Eddy County Fair, Artesia FFA and herself exceptionally well. She is an active leader in our FFA chapter and will serve as the 2025-26 chapter president. She is truly a leader for others.”

“This means a lot to her,” said Baylee’s dad, Drew Denison. “Winning that contest is a little bit of recognition for the hours she spends in the barn with her animals.”

Mom Lindsey Denison said Baylee was involved with the Cottonwood 4-H and FFA for seven years.

Youth organizations such as 4-H and FFA teach the youth of today important life skills and caretaking, Drew Denison said: “FFA and 4-H is important to building those good adults.”

Self-Denial

0

Ty Houghtaling

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Matt 16:24

Self-denial is the call of Christ. He modeled it in his short life here in the world and He called all who would dare follow Him to deny self. Our culture is consumed with instant gratification. Self-control or self-denial is so very foreign to the everyday individual. Now, athletes understand self-denial. They see the value in disciplining their bodies for a goal, but even modern athletes feel the increasing pressure to “have it all, all the time”. I asked an online AI to write a short commentary on why self-denial is beneficial, here are some of the highlights:

1.      Practicing self-denial can sharpen one’s focus on higher goals and deeper values. It allows individuals to break free from the tyranny of impulse, cultivating discipline, patience, and resilience. When someone chooses restraint over indulgence, they’re not losing freedom—they’re exercising it.

2.      Moreover, self-denial fosters empathy and spiritual maturity. By setting aside personal desires, one opens space to consider the needs of others more fully, echoing the sacrificial love that Jesus exemplified. The Christian tradition doesn’t glorify suffering for its own sake, but rather for the transformation it brings—how denying oneself can prepare the soul for higher service and draw the heart nearer to God. (copilot.microsoft.com)

Side note: my prompt said nothing about Christianity or the Bible or even Jesus, yet those lines above is what the online AI wrote. I have asked spiritual questions before of this particular service and so I guess the algorithms were working as they are supposed to, but it is still interesting that the web went to Jesus’ call for self-denial in its commentary without specifically being asked to.

In a society that champions endless consumption, self-denial can be a radical concept. Jesus knows whatever it is that you are still holding on to. He knows that you are struggling with something that is keeping you away from more of His blessings. Whatever it is, let it go! Take up His cross and follow Him. It is a radical call and it will literally change your life forever.

Artesia offensive lineman learns lessons from FFA

Kyle Bean, a junior at Artesia High School, is more than just a football player. Bean is a risk-taker and unafraid to blaze a trail, whether in football or agriculture.

His agriculture teacher at Artesia, Haley Ellett, came up to him and said, “If you are not going to show chickens, then you should do this cake.” Ellett thought it would be funny if he were the first boy among all the girls who entered the competition to win.

Bean said he thought that it didn’t seem like a bad idea. He received help with the cake from his mother, Raelynn Bean.

Cake judging

Bean said the cake contest was judged based on taste, not appearance. He also had to write an essay of less than 600 words about his experiences in 4-H and FFA, formerly known as Future Farmers of America.

Bean, 17, wrote an essay about showing dairy heifers. He has been doing that since he was in third grade, when he was 9 years old.

“The most important lesson I learned is to shut the gate,” Bean said. “If you don’t shut the gate, it is going to be a long night trying to get your heifers back into the gate.”

Bean said that one night, his mother received a notification on her phone from Ring doorbell that packages had arrived. Bean found this weird because it was 2 a.m. when the notification was sent. The heifers were ringing the doorbell, trying to get inside.

Bean’s mom woke him up to try to get five heifers in the gate. The only problem was that it was pitch black outside as he and his mom searched for an all-black heifer.

Bean wins

Bean said the cake he baked had a United States flag design. Its flavor was vanilla with blueberries and strawberries.

ExxonMobil partnered with the Eddy County Fair Board to offer scholarships to graduating seniors in 2025, totaling $20,000. With the win, Bean received 25% of the money, and the other 75% went to the graduating seniors.

Bean found out he won when he was at home, getting ready to clip heifers while preparing to go to the fair.

His mother asked him to come outside, and Bean thought he might be in trouble. His mother handed him the cellphone, and as he looked at it, he started to smile.

“I was not expecting it,” Bean said. “I still laugh whenever someone tells me good job.”

Bean is the District 5 (southeastern corner of New Mexico) vice president for FFA and wants to become a state officer. He would also like to be the District 5 president and state vice president.

Bean said that he has learned lessons from FFA and football that translate to each other.

“You get out what you put in,” Bean said. “The main thing that I have learned is if you want something badly, you have to work for it.”

Bean won Class Three (separate age groups) in the dairy heifer show this year as well as three second place finishes.

Bean said the advice he would give to any student or athlete is that if you want to achieve anything in life, you must put in the work.

Football player takes first place at fair

Colton Sandmann, a 15-year-old freshman at Artesia Junior High School, helps raise lambs and shows market lambs, which are 5 months old, at the Eddy County Fair.

Sandmann got his start in farming by working on his grandmother’s farm in Lovington. He has been doing this since he was 8 years old.

Sandmann is an offensive lineman for Artesia Junior High.

He said working with lambs and ewes, along with playing football, has taught him patience.

“You have to stand in the ring and wait for the judges,” Sandmann said. “You have to have patience with your animal.”

At the fair this year, Sandmann won first place with his cross-ewe lamb and placed fourth with his cross lamb (with a red, black and white spotted coat).

Sandmann said that he wants to be a rancher and wielder when he graduates from high school.

Sandmann raises his lambs from birth. His day often starts at 5 a.m. He feeds them at 6:30 a.m., then goes to school, attends football practice and finally feeds them again after he gets home. If he has a game, his father will feed them. However, on a typical day, he feeds his animals at 6 p.m.

“Taking care of these animals takes a lot of effort,” Sandmann said. “And a lot of work.”

“I have seen a lot of patience in my son since he started farming and playing football,” said his mother, Kendra Powell.

“Those animals are not easy to work with,” Powell said. “Those lambs have personalities of their own. It teaches you to calmly go about showing them rather than being rough with them. Football teaches you how to be rough.”

Chili Cook-Off is more than a taste test

The winner of the 80th annual Eddy County Fair Chili Cook-Off was Lance Moore of Barrelhead Cookers. He took first place in the Classic Chili Cook-Off division and second place in All Chili Goes on Saturday at the Covered Arena.

Moore said he cooks chicken, ribs, brisket and pulled pork and has been a competitive barbecue chef for the last 12 years.

Moore, who is from Carlsbad, won the Classic Chili Cook-Off at the Eddy County Fair in 2023. Moore said he does private catering and events and is opening a restaurant in Carlsbad.

“There are six different chili spices in the chili,” Moore said without revealing the secret to his recipe. “I get lucky now and then.”

Misty Price, who previously competed in the Chili Cook-Off, has served as the director of the cook-off since 2023. She said the fair has expanded to include salsa judging in 2024.

Price said 17 teams were competing this year, with over 200 people attending to taste the chili.

“Oh, it went great,” Price said. “It was a good turnout, and I am thrilled.”

The judges of the event were the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office and Eddy County first responders.

The Chili Cook-Off was about more than just chili, as musician Fabian Romero sang songs and couples danced the two-step. A father held his 3-year-old daughter in his arms, sweeping her around the dance floor as both laughed and smiled.

Artesia moves forward with city administrator job

0

Rebecca Hauschild
For the Artesia Daily Press

Artesia Mayor John Henry could be getting some help running the city after city councilors on Tuesday, July 22, approved a job description for a city administrator and moved forward toward creating the position.

Councilors voted 5-0 to approve the job description.

City staff planned to bring a proposal addressing the job’s salary to the City Council for a vote at a future meeting.

The new position will focus on improving interdepartmental coordination, tracking ongoing projects, and supporting the mayor in administrative duties, officials said.

Henry, who also serves as a state representative for District 54, covering portions of Eddy, Chaves and Otero counties, said a city administrator would not only reduce strain on the mayor position, but also create consistency among municipal departments.

According to the job description included in the city council’s agenda packet, the administrator “assists the Mayor by performing and coordinating responsible administrative work in city operations (impacting all City departments).”

The post would also be “responsible for oversight management for capital project & budget planning, coordinating activities of the senior leadership group and integrates interdepartmental activities,” read the description.

“I believe our goal is to, once we get the job description approved, we’ll have a proposal for the salary, and everyone can get their two cents in,” said Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Youtsey.

Other business

Development/Infrastructure Director Byron Landfair reported crews have moved on to Phase 2 of the 26th Street project. Phase one was extended 20 days primarily because of the quality of blocks delivered for the retaining wall, according to Landfair.

He also reported the waterline replacement project on Grant Avenue moved to Phase 2 with work happening between 20th Street and 26th Street.

Eastbound traffic on Grand Avenue is currently closed with the westbound lane open. The South 2nd Street and Richardson Avenue rehab project is complete. Landfair reported his department currently has  projects in progress to increase the city’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The city recently received a bid for $3.33 million for two new airport hangers. The project was funded in the 2024 budget. Work is also underway on remodeling of the terminal building and is expected to be complete in time for the Roswell Air Races in September.

Southwest New Mexico Cuisine: Bold Flavors, Deep Roots

The Southwest New Mexico’s region’s food heritage began with the Ancestral Puebloans, who grew the “Three Sisters” crops—corn, beans, and squash—long before European contact. The Spanish arrived in the late 1500s, bringing livestock, fruit trees, garlic, and the now-iconic chile pepper. Under Mexican rule in the early 1800s, tortillas, tamales, and enchiladas became widespread. After U.S. annexation, Anglo traditions introduced flour and new baking techniques, but the core Southwest New Mexican flavors remained intact.

Hatch chile: A New Mexican icon

No ingredient symbolizes New Mexico more than the Hatch chile. Grown in the Hatch Valley along the Rio Grande, these chiles thrive in the region’s sun-soaked days and cool nights. Hatch chiles are prized for their smoky heat and rich flavor—so much so that they’ve earned global culinary fame. Every fall, towns across the state fill with the aroma of roasting chiles, a ritual as much as a recipe.

Trendy chile relleno with crispy pork belly & ranchero sauce

*A modern twist on a classic dish—bold and savory with a touch of indulgence.*

Ingredients (Serves 4):

Hatch Chile’s

• 4 large roasted Hatch green chiles, peeled and seeded

• 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack or Asadero cheese

• 3 eggs, separated

• 1/4 cup flour

• Oil for frying

Crispy pork belly

Cut pork belly into 4 3/4-inch pieces. Season with salt and pepper.

Sear in a skillet over medium-high heat until browned.

Add 1/4 cup water, cover, and cook for 20–25 minutes until tender.

Uncover and cook on high until the pieces are crispy and golden.

Ranchero sauce:

• 1 tbsp vegetable oil

• 1/2 small onion, finely chopped

• 1 clove garlic, minced

• 1 large ripe tomato, chopped (or 1/2 cup canned crushed tomato)

• 1/4 cup chopped roasted green chile (optional)

• 1/4 tsp cumin

• Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

1. To make the ranchero sauce: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onion and garlic until soft. Add tomatoes, jalapeño, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer 10–15 minutes, then blend if desired for a smoother sauce.

2. Stuff each roasted Hatch chile with Monterey Jack or Asadero cheese and 4 ¾ pieces crispy pork belly. Secure with toothpicks if needed.

3. Whip egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in beaten yolks, flour, and milk to make a batter.

4. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Dip each stuffed chile into the batter and fry until golden on all sides.

5. Serve with warm ranchero sauce spooned over the top.
