Pete Quinones was hired as the permanent chief of the Artesia Police Department after serving as interim chief since July.
He replaced former chief Kirk Roberts who announced his retirement three months ago.
District 1 City Councilor Raul Rodriguez said councilors met in a closed-door session Tuesday afternoon to discuss Quinones’ hiring.
He said Artesia Mayor Jeff Youtsey recommended the hiring of Quinones after interviewing the chief and another applicant.
“We have a good staff over there. We were ready to move forward,” Rodriguez said in a telephone interview Tuesday evening.
