An Artesia man was arrested Monday on multiple charges after attempting to flee police on foot.

At approximately 2:52 p.m. Monday, Artesia Police Department officers were notified of an argument occurring in front of the Public Safety Complex between a male and female subject in a black Jeep.

The Jeep had made its way toward town but was located and stopped at the intersection of 26th and Main streets. After the vehicle pulled over, a male subject exited the passenger side and fled east on foot.

Officers gave chase in their patrol vehicles, spotting the subject again running north toward the VA Clinic. He ignored their commands to stop, and as he crossed the sidewalk into the clinic parking lot, one officer activated his Taser, bringing the subject to the ground.

The subject, identified as Jessie Marcus Carmona, 29, of Artesia, told police he “didn’t know” why he was running. Upon emptying his pockets, officers discovered a small, silver metal pipe with a white residue in its ends, as well as a live 9mm round.

As officers were searching Carmona, an anonymous call was received informing police the subject had thrown an object while being pursued. Officers were able to locate a 9mm Ruger handgun.

Carmona, who had three prior felony convictions, was subsequently arrested and charged with resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, being a felon in possession of a firearm, tampering with evidence, and possession of narcotic paraphernalia.
