When Manuel Florez and his wife planned their trip to Normandy, France, earlier this year, a friend of his suggested he contact management personnel at the American cemetery at Colevillesur-Mer.

Because of this, Florez was able to play “Taps,” the musical piece used by the U.S. military at dusk and funerals, on his bugle during the flag-lowering ceremony.

“Usually they just play ‘Taps’ on a CD for their ceremonies,” Florez said. “But I thought it would mean more if ‘Taps’ was played live for once.”

Florez and his wife made the trek to Europe, spent a week in France, and went on a tour of Normandy for the D-Day ceremonies.

Being in the military during the Vietnam-era gave Florez an appreciation for what soldiers go through.

“These kids sacrificed their lives for our country,” Florez said. “They never came home.”

Florez was afraid he wasn’t going to be able to finish the short piece because he was emotional.

“There are only 24 notes in the whole song,” Florez said. “But when you’re that emotional, your breath isn’t quite right and the facial muscles you use for playing don’t work as well.”

However, he got through it and played for the people who were present at the ceremony. Florez considers this moment his finest hour and reflects on it often.

“It was an honor and a privilege,” he said. “It was such a great experience.”

Florez belongs to Bugles Across America, a nonprofit organization that will honor any veteran by playing “Taps” at their funeral. Florez says he hasn’t played “Taps” at a funeral since moving back to New Mexico six years ago and isn’t sure if people are even aware of the organization’s existence.

This service is available at any cemetery in New Mexico at no cost. To request a playing or for more information, contact Florez directly at 575-746-3838 or email compa7072@yahoo.com.
