A Stand Down event for homeless and near-homeless military veterans will be held from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Legacy Inn and Suites, 2210 W. Main St.

The event provides free hot meals, haircuts, backpacks, clothing, medical services, employment assistance, counseling, and many more services.

The Stand Down events are presented through a collaborated effort by the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services, VFW Post 8703, American Legion Post 7, Mobile Vet Center, New Mexico Workforce Center, United Way of South Eddy County, American Legion Riders Post 3, Disabled American Veterans Post 19, Southeast New Mexico Transportation Services, and local barbers and hairstylists.

Financial contributions were also made by the Simmons Dental Clinic and the Realtors Association of New Mexico.

On Oct. 10, SENM Transportation Services will be available to take veterans from Roswell to and from the Artesia Stand Down.

Representatives from the participating agencies will have staff on hand to help homeless and near-homeless veterans and their families. Veterans’ service officers from the NMDVS offices in Carlsbad and Roswell will also be available to assist veterans with filing for VA and state benefits.
