The Bulldog and Lady Bulldog tennis teams continued to gain quality experience against fields of tough opponents Friday and Saturday at the Cavern City Classic in Carlsbad.
In another tournament loaded with Texas competition – which competes year-round – the ‘Dogs finished fourth overall and the Lady ‘Dogs sixth in the team head-to-head event.
“We’re just growing,” head coach Tim Trentham said today. “That’s the biggest thing right now with both teams.”
Trentham said the Artesia girls delivered likely their best outing to date, while the boys appear to be settling into their new lineup.
“I think this tournament was good for us on the girls’ side in that I think this is the most solidly played tournament up and down we’ve had,” Trentham said. “Our place is not really an indication of the way we played, because a lot of teams we’ll play in district aren’t quite at the competition level as the teams that were at this Carlsbad tournament.
“On the boys’ side, we had a lot of big lineup changes on the lower end this year, and we’re getting real competitive on that lower end as far as finalizing our team. There’s only a few more weeks before we start district and a few more after that before we have to have our state rosters finalized, so it’s good to see that competitive edge at the lower end. The top end is having some up and down days, but our play overall is about where it needs to be for us to do what we need to do come time for district.”
The Artesia teams will head to Roswell Thursday for a dual against NMMI, then to Portales next Tuesday to take on the Rams and Ramettes in another varsity dual.
